How IGCSE Religious Studies works, board by board

Cambridge IGCSE Religious Studies 0490 asks students to study two religions from Christianity, Islam and Judaism. It suits ages 14 to 16 and is examined only in the November series. Strong grades can lead to A Level Divinity or Islamic Studies.

Pearson Edexcel offers International GCSE Religious Studies as 4RS1, sat in June and graded 9 to 1. Paper 1 covers beliefs and values, and Paper 2 the religious community. Students choose one of six religions, so check which course the school follows.

According to the Cambridge 0490 syllabus, 40% of all marks reward evaluation: weighing different views with evidence and reaching a reasoned judgement. Descriptive answers stall here. One-to-one lessons give your child steady practice in arguing both sides, then deciding clearly.

How lessons work

Where faith knowledge becomes exam marks

Most students we meet already know the festivals, pillars and creeds. Lessons focus on what the mark scheme rewards next: explanation, evidence and a firm judgement.

A tutor for your exact course

Cambridge 0490 or Edexcel 4RS1? Christianity and Islam, or another pair? Share those details and a suitable tutor is in place within a day. If they are not right, we offer a free re-match.

Part (c) practice every week

Each Cambridge question ends with an 8-mark evaluation. Your child writes one most weeks. The tutor grades it with the levels grid and points to what lifts it a level.

Teachings used as evidence

Quoting a Bible verse, a Qur'anic idea or a Torah teaching is not enough on its own. Lessons practise tying every source to the exact point it proves.

Two views, then a verdict

Examiners want different points of view and a reasoned conclusion. Lessons build a simple paragraph plan, so answers argue both sides before reaching a clear judgement.

Replays, flashcards and key terms

Every lesson is recorded to rewatch. Notes, flashcards and topic maps cover key terms, from Tawhid to the Trinity, ready for revision before mocks.

Scheduled in your time zone

Sessions slot into school nights or weekends, set in your own local time. Lessons are paid one at a time or in packages, with nothing to sign up to long term.

Inside the classroom

Lessons you can replay before every essay test

Model answers grow line by line on a whiteboard you both write on. Our academic team reviews the recordings too, so standards hold all year.

Paper 1

Worship, beliefs and sacred places

Common questions

IGCSE Religious Studies: what families ask us

Quick answers on exam boards, religions, evaluation answers and lesson costs.

Which religions does Cambridge 0490 cover?

Students study two of three religions: Christianity, Islam and Judaism. Both papers test the same two. Tell us which pair your child's school teaches, so lessons match the questions they will answer.

Why is part (c) so hard to score on?

Part (c) is worth 8 of each 20 marks and rewards evaluation, not description. Answers need different views, evidence for each and a clear, reasoned judgement. Retelling what believers do earns little here.

When are the Cambridge 0490 exams?

Cambridge offers Religious Studies 0490 in the November series only, and it is not available in every administrative zone. Your school's exams officer can confirm the timetable for your region.

Is Islamiyat the same course?

No. Cambridge Islamiyat is a separate IGCSE, syllabus 0493, that studies Islam alone. Religious Studies 0490 compares two religions. Check the syllabus code on your child's timetable before booking.

How is Edexcel 4RS1 different?

Edexcel students study one religion from six, sit both papers in June and receive a grade from 9 to 1. Paper 1 is worth 60% and Paper 2 is worth 40%.

What do lessons cost?

Our IGCSE tutors charge from AED 50 per hour, set by each tutor. Your trial costs AED 20 to 60. Later lessons can be bought singly or as a package, with no contract.
