IGCSE German explained: codes, papers and grades
IGCSE German is for learners aged 14 to 16 studying it as a foreign language. Cambridge offers 0525, using grades A* to G, and 7159, using 9 to 1. Pearson Edexcel uses 4GN1. Fluent speakers can take First Language German 0505.
According to the grade breakdown Cambridge International published for June 2025, 43.3% of German candidates earned an A*, and 92.5% finished on C or higher. When so many score highly, a handful of grammar slips can separate an A from an A*.
All four Cambridge papers carry equal weight: listening, reading, speaking and writing. Marks slip away through wrong case endings, verbs in the wrong place after weil or dass, and thin answers in the oral. A tutor corrects these habits in every lesson.
Broad topic areas set by Cambridge, covering home life, school, work and the wider world.

How we teach German, from grammar to the oral
Lessons are live, private and paced to your child. These six habits shape each week of German study with us.
Every topic area, from daily life to the wider world
Your tutor works through the Cambridge topic areas or the Edexcel themes, teaching vocabulary and grammar together so your child can use both in all four skills.
App, group class or a private German tutor?
Apps help with vocabulary and group classes add structure, but neither usually gives one student a full oral rehearsal or marked writing. Here is how they stack up against private German tutoring on what the exam rewards.
| Feature | IGCSE Tutors Live, one to one | Language app Self-paced vocabulary | Group class Shared online lessons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Speaking test rehearsal with feedback | Limited time each | ||
| Writing marked against the mark scheme | Sometimes | ||
| Grammar taught at your child's pace | Fixed drills | Set by the group | |
| Listening practice with past papers | Some audio drills | Sometimes | |
| Built around Cambridge or Edexcel papers | Rarely | Varies by provider | |
| Lessons recorded to rewatch | Not applicable | Sometimes |
Four Cambridge papers and one Edexcel route, prepared separately
Cambridge students face four papers of equal weight. Edexcel 4GN1 has three, and its Paper 2 tests reading and writing together. Each skill gets its own preparation.
Listening without panic
Your child hears each recording twice and answers matching and multiple-choice questions. The tutor trains note-taking on numbers, opinions and negatives.
Reading for exact detail
Six question groups mix matching with short answers in German. Your tutor practises spotting synonyms and answering in short, accurate German.
Role play and two conversations
Ten minutes of preparation come first, then one role play and two conversations on set topics. Mock tests with the tutor build fluent, developed answers.
Form, message and longer piece
Three tasks: a short form, roughly 80 to 90 words of directed writing, then 130 to 140 words in an email, letter, article or blog. Your tutor marks drafts and tightens grammar.
Reading and Writing combined
One long paper splits time between reading and writing. Your tutor sets timed practice so neither half is rushed, plus picture-based speaking mocks for Paper 3.
Accurate grammar under pressure
Every lesson includes quick checks on cases, endings and verb position, so correct German becomes automatic in the oral and in timed writing.
Replay any German lesson, with scores and notes attached
Each lesson runs on an interactive whiteboard with live audio, so pronunciation errors are caught and fixed at once. Afterwards, each recording is scored on more than 20 measures by our academic team.
- Replays for practising pronunciation
- Notes, vocabulary flashcards and topic maps
- Lessons scored on 20+ measures

the teachers who teach me are really kind and they are ready to help me at anytime
I had a great experience… especially with their counsellor Wajiha Gul. She was very attentive, kind, and genuinely listened to all my concerns. She offered helpful solutions, supported my ideas regarding changes, and was happy to assist in every possible way.

IGCSE German lessons: what families usually ask
Clear answers on syllabus choices, the oral, grammar, upcoming changes and fees.
Is 0525 different from the 9 to 1 version?
The four papers and the content are the same. The difference is the scale: 0525 uses A* to G and 7159 uses 9 to 1. Both cannot be sat in one exam series, so your school picks one.
How is the 0525 speaking test run?
Candidates get ten minutes to prepare, then speak for roughly ten minutes: a role play with five prompts, then two conversations on topics the examiner picks. The school’s teacher examines and marks it, with Cambridge checking samples afterwards.
Can a tutor help with cases and word order?
Yes. The tutor explains why each case is used, then drills it in short sentences your child actually needs, such as opinions with weil and dass. Regular correction in speaking and writing helps it stick.
Is the Cambridge German exam changing?
Yes, from June 2028. The code stays 0525, but every paper will be out of 40 marks, reading turns multiple choice, and note-making becomes allowed in the oral preparation time.
How is the Edexcel 4GN1 oral different?
Edexcel's test lasts 8 to 10 minutes. Your child first discusses a picture they chose, then holds two unprepared conversations on topics picked at random. It is externally assessed and worth 25% of the grade.
What do families pay for German tutoring?
The trial is AED 20 to 60. Regular German lessons start at AED 50 an hour, and the exact rate depends on the tutor. No contract is needed, since paying lesson by lesson is fine.
