How is IGCSE Maths graded and examined?
IGCSE Maths is usually sat at 16, after two years of study. Cambridge offers syllabus 0580, graded A* to G, and 0980, graded 9 to 1. Pearson Edexcel offers 4MA1. Each one covers number, algebra, geometry and statistics, and leads to A-Level.
According to Cambridge International's worldwide grade figures for June 2025, an A* went to 19.8% of IGCSE Mathematics entries, while 70.9% finished with C or better. Tier choice matters: Core papers cap the grade at C, and Extended papers open up A*.
Marks slip away in three places: arithmetic on the non-calculator paper, working that is not shown, and multi-step problems that need a plan. A one-to-one tutor spots which of these costs your child most and drills it with past questions.
Share of Mathematics entries awarded an A* by Cambridge in the June 2025 series.
Of every Cambridge Maths grade comes from a paper sat without a calculator.
Marks in total across the two Extended papers, or the two Edexcel papers.
How each Maths lesson is put together
Lessons are live and one to one, so the pace follows your child, not a class. This is what families get from the first week.

What each Maths paper asks, and how we train for it
Cambridge students sit two papers, Core or Extended, one with a calculator and one without. Edexcel 4MA1 students sit two calculator papers at Foundation or Higher tier.
Core, no calculator
Written methods and number sense carry this paper. Your tutor sets short timed drills so arithmetic stays accurate under pressure.
Extended, no calculator
Surds, indices and algebraic fractions must be done by hand. Your tutor teaches exact answers and quick checks that catch slips.
Core, calculator allowed
Real-life problems on money, rates and data. Your tutor shows how to use a scientific calculator well and still write down the method.
Extended, calculator allowed
Multi-step questions mix topics, such as trigonometry inside a 3D shape. Your tutor teaches your child to sketch a plan first, then calculate.
Papers 1 and 2, tiered
Both papers allow a calculator and come at Foundation, grades 5 to 1, or Higher, grades 9 to 4. Your tutor prepares the tier your child is entered for.
Method marks, earned on purpose
Many questions reward the method as well as the answer. Your tutor checks layout, rounding and units in every past question, so fewer marks slip away.
Nine topic areas, from number to statistics
Your tutor covers the nine Cambridge topic areas at Core or Extended depth, beginning with whichever area costs your child the most marks.
A tutor, a practice website or a catch-up class?
Many families start with an online practice website or a school catch-up session. Here we compare them with a one-to-one tutor on feedback about working, focus on weak topics and preparation for the non-calculator paper.

Students describe their Maths lessons
I understood so many things I used to have issues/problems with in math and english. The tutors are supportive… They explain things clearly and take the time to go over topics until I understand clearly.
I have found that doing math tuition is very helpful in school as I learn a lot of things… I can always be prepared and I can also always ask any help I need with school work that I am unsure with…
Best economic and maths tutor is on this platform. They have helped me understand all of the content with ease better then my teachers in school.

IGCSE Maths tutoring: answers for parents
Quick answers on tiers, calculators, exam boards, A-Level plans and lesson costs.
Will Core Maths limit my child's grade?
Yes. Core papers lead to grades C to G only, while Extended opens up A* to E. A child hoping for a B or above needs Extended. A tutor can judge readiness from recent mock papers.
How do you prepare for the non-calculator paper?
Your child practises written methods for fractions, percentages, indices and surds, then sits short timed sets. The tutor marks each set and repeats the methods that went wrong until they become automatic.
Is Cambridge 0980 different from 0580?
The papers, content and timings match. The difference is the grade scale: 0580 is graded A* to G, while 0980 is graded 9 to 1. Lessons cover the same content either way, so just tell us which code your school enters.
Can my child use a calculator for Edexcel 4MA1?
Yes. Both Edexcel 4MA1 papers allow a calculator, and each lasts 2 hours with 100 marks. Foundation leads to grades 5 to 1 and Higher to 9 to 4. Twelve of our Maths tutors teach 4MA1.
Does a strong grade help with A-Level Maths?
A-Level Maths builds directly on IGCSE algebra, graphs and trigonometry. Students who finish IGCSE confident with these topics often find the step up easier. Your tutor can stretch Extended students with harder problem-solving questions.
What do Maths lessons cost per hour?
An hour of IGCSE Maths costs from AED 50, depending on the tutor. Trials are AED 20 to 60. Families pay as they go or pick a package, and can stop at any point.
