Skip the KL traffic: IGCSE lessons at home across Malaysia
In Mont Kiara, Bangsar and Damansara Heights, the school run already eats into the evening. Families there, and in Petaling Jaya, Penang and Johor Bahru, add a tutor without adding another drive.
Malaysia's education ministry says about two in three students at international schools are Malaysian. So many parents here weigh IGCSE against the national SPM route first.
Choosing IGCSE over SPM: what Malaysian parents should know
According to ISC Research, Malaysia had 348 international schools and 111,185 international school students in July 2024. A large share of these schools prepare students for Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel IGCSE.
How is IGCSE different from SPM?
SPM is the national exam in Malaysia. IGCSE is an international course taught in international schools, graded A* to G by Cambridge or 9 to 1 by Pearson Edexcel and Oxford AQA.
Ready for Additional Maths 0606?
Able mathematicians often add a second Maths subject. Cambridge Additional Maths (0606) and Edexcel Further Pure Maths (4PM1) both stretch them, and our tutors teach each one alongside core Maths 0580 and 4MA1.
Lessons that fit a Malaysian school week
Lessons run on Malaysia time, often after school or at weekends. As it is all online, families in Penang or Johor Bahru book the tutors Kuala Lumpur families use.

IGCSE explained for parents comparing it with SPM
Students aged 14 to 16 usually spend two years on IGCSE. Their syllabus might be set by Oxford AQA, Pearson Edexcel or Cambridge. In Malaysia it is taught in international schools, while national schools prepare students for the SPM.
Most students take their IGCSE papers during the summer series, then wait until mid or late August for grades. Cambridge also has an autumn sitting, graded in January. Cambridge uses A* to G; the other two boards use 9 to 1.
Our tutors teach every major board, so a child switching from a national school can still get a specialist for each subject.
Three questions before choosing IGCSE or SPM
The right route depends on your child, not on a league table. These three questions help Malaysian parents think about which qualification fits their plans.
IGCSE prepares students for sixth-form routes like A-Level and the IB. If your child is aiming for one of these, an international route may suit them well.
Schools here often use Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel. Ask which one your school uses, because papers, grading and syllabus codes differ between them.
Some students adjust quickly to IGCSE question styles, while others need help with command words and mark schemes. A one-to-one tutor targets that gap directly.
Which IGCSE support suits families in Malaysia?
Malaysian parents often consider a group online class or a home tutor alongside us. The table compares all three on attention, travel, board fit, recordings and parent updates, to help you decide calmly.

IGCSE or SPM, prices and timing: common parent questions
Clear answers on switching from SPM, lesson costs, boards and timing, for Malaysian families with children in Years 9 to 11.
Can my child move from SPM to IGCSE?
Some families switch, but entry depends on the receiving school. If your child joins an IGCSE school, a tutor helps them adjust to new question styles and fill any content gaps.
Does IGCSE lead to A-Level and IB?
Yes. IGCSE is built as a stepping stone to sixth-form courses such as A-Level and the IB. Check entry grades with the sixth form or college your child hopes to join.
What will weekly IGCSE lessons cost us?
Expect to pay from AED 50 an hour, roughly US$14, with the tutor and subject setting the exact rate. The trial ranges from AED 20 to 60. Settle each lesson by card or Apple Pay, or prepay a bundle.
Do you have tutors for Penang and Johor Bahru?
Yes. Every lesson is online, so a student in Penang, Johor Bahru, Petaling Jaya or Kuala Lumpur picks from the same 63 tutors.
Does my child need Additional Maths?
Not always. Cambridge Additional Maths (0606) and Edexcel Further Pure Maths (4PM1) are extras for strong maths students. Ask the school first. Our tutors can teach either one next to core Maths.
What time are lessons in Malaysia?
Lessons follow Malaysia time (UTC+8), from straight after school to evenings and weekends. Slots are yours to pick, and you may shift them around school events and exam weeks.
