How lessons build tones, characters and confidence
Chinese rewards little and often. Each live lesson mixes speaking, reading and writing, so no skill is left until the month before the exam.
What is IGCSE Mandarin Chinese (0547)?
Cambridge IGCSE Mandarin Chinese 0547 is built for students learning Chinese as a foreign language, most of them aged 14 to 16. It aims at CEFR level A2. Pearson Edexcel runs a similar course, International GCSE Chinese 4CN1, graded 9 to 1.
According to Cambridge's grade distribution for June 2025, 76.9% of Mandarin Chinese (Foreign Language) entries were graded A*, while 97.9% gained a C or better. With so many students at the highest grade, errors in tones or characters can decide the result.
Marks are often lost in small ways: a wrong tone in the role play, a character only half remembered, or a long text read too slowly. In one-to-one lessons a tutor hears these slips early and plans each week around fixing them.

Broad topic areas in 0547, labelled A to E, which set the context for all vocabulary.
Marks for the Cambridge speaking test, which lasts about 10 minutes.
Is an app enough for IGCSE Chinese?
Plenty of families start with a language app or an after-school group before tutoring. Here we set those options against one-to-one lessons on spoken feedback, character writing and exam practice, where a tutor tends to add most.
| Feature | IGCSE Tutors Live, one to one | Language app Self-paced practice | After-school group Shared lessons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tones corrected by a person | Varies by app | When time allows | |
| Handwritten characters checked | Varies by app | Sometimes | |
| Role play and conversation practice | Every lesson | Limited | Shared with others |
| Past exam papers for your board | Rarely | Sometimes | |
| Pace set by your child's weak areas | Self-paced | Set for the group | |

Four steps to regular Mandarin lessons
Tell us the exam year
Mention the board and exam session, plus the skill your child dreads most: speaking, reading or writing.
Meet your suggested tutor
Within a day of your message, we put forward a tutor suited to the syllabus code and your child's level.
Take a short trial
Book one trial lesson for AED 20 to 60 and decide afterwards, with nothing to sign.
Build a weekly speaking habit
Lessons tackle the weakest skill first, week after week. Changing tutor later on still counts as a free re-match.
Five topic areas, from daily routines to the wider world
Cambridge groups the vocabulary into five areas, A to E. Your tutor works through the sub-topics your child knows least, using the official word and grammar lists.
Students and families on learning with us
the teacher explains the concepts clearly and its interactive as well.
…has really helped me before, the tutors are nice and straightforward, they have a genuine interest in improving the students, the communication is also good and they are reasonable if you miss a class.
The teaching styles used for each subject are effective. The teachers are also very friendly.
Hear the lesson again, tones and all
Characters are written stroke by stroke on a shared digital whiteboard, and every lesson is recorded. Each recording is then checked by our academic team to hold standards steady.
- Recordings to replay for listening practice
- Notes, flashcards and topic maps
- Every lesson scored on 20+ measures
Know how each skill is moving
You do not need to read Chinese to follow progress. Short tutor notes arrive weekly and a fuller report monthly, plus an alert if anything is missed.
- Weekly notes in plain English
- A progress report each month
- Alerts for missed lessons or homework
How your child is prepared for each Chinese paper
The Cambridge 0547 exam has a separate paper for each skill, worth 25% apiece. Edexcel 4CN1 has three papers, and its combined reading and writing paper carries half the grade.
Listening for detail
Thirty multiple-choice and matching questions, each recording heard twice. Your tutor drills picking out numbers, times and opinions the first time round.
Reading at pace
Texts move from short notices to full articles, with some answers written in Chinese. Your tutor builds reading speed with timed passages from past papers.
Role play and conversation
Five role-play questions come first, followed by two topic conversations, after 10 minutes to prepare. Mock tests with your tutor make the format feel routine and keep tones clear.
Characters on paper
A form, a task of 80 to 100 characters and one of about 150. It is worth 45 marks until 2027 and 40 from 2028. Your tutor marks drafts against the mark scheme.
Paper 2, reading and writing
Five reading tasks, then two pieces of writing plus four English sentences to translate into Chinese. Practice splits the time evenly between the halves.
Tones and character recall
Short checks open every lesson: tones heard and spoken, characters written from memory. Small daily gains here lift marks in all four papers.

Which Cambridge Chinese course suits my child?
Mandarin Chinese 0547 is for foreign language learners. Chinese as a Second Language 0523 and First Language Chinese 0509 suit stronger speakers. Cambridge does not let students take 0547 with either of those in the same series.
Simplified or traditional characters?
Edexcel 4CN1 prints Paper 2 twice, in simplified and in traditional characters, and students work from either. Let us know which set your child learns at school so the match fits.
What does the Chinese oral exam involve?
Cambridge 0547 allows 10 minutes to prepare, then about 10 minutes of speaking: a role play followed by two conversations on different topics. Edexcel 4CN1 runs 8 to 10 minutes, with a picture task and two topics chosen at random.
How can my child remember more characters?
Little and often works best. Your child gets flashcards after each lesson, drawn from the exam word list, and the tutor checks recall at the start of the next lesson before adding new characters.
Is the Cambridge exam changing from 2028?
Yes. For June 2028 onwards, the 0547 writing paper drops from 45 to 40 marks, candidates can jot notes during speaking preparation, and Cambridge adds new words to the vocabulary list.
When can lessons start, and at what cost?
Once you enquire, a suitable tutor is matched within 24 hours. Your child's opening trial is AED 20 to 60. After that, Mandarin lessons cost from AED 50 per hour, and you choose single payments or a package.
More language and essay subjects
Many Mandarin students also take another language or an essay subject. Choose one below to learn how we teach it.
