Moving to Canada mid-course

Can your child finish IGCSE after moving to Canada?

According to Cambridge International, over 50 Canadian universities recognise its qualifications. Few Canadian schools teach IGCSE, so families who arrive mid-course can keep studying it online with a specialist.

Keeping the same board after a move

If your child began Cambridge in Dubai or Edexcel in London, we match a tutor for that same board. Syllabus codes, for example Edexcel Physics 4PH1 or Cambridge Chemistry 0620, stay the same wherever you live.

How does IGCSE sit beside a provincial diploma?

Your child may attend a local school working towards a diploma such as the OSSD in Ontario, while finishing IGCSE papers on the side. A tutor keeps the IGCSE work moving without crowding out school homework.

Lessons from Pacific to Newfoundland time

Canada stretches across several time zones. A student in Vancouver and one in Halifax book different local slots, and every lesson is recorded in case a school event clashes.

IGCSE support for families settling in Toronto, Calgary or Halifax

Many newcomer families land in Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal. Others settle in Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa or Halifax. Lessons run on a home laptop, so a move between cities never means starting with a new tutor.

Provincial diplomas, such as Ontario's OSSD, sit beside IGCSE rather than replacing it. Families arriving from the UK or the Gulf often keep IGCSE to finish what they began, then enter the May/June exams.

IGCSE for newcomer families

What newcomers should know about IGCSE in Canada

The IGCSE covers ages 14 to 16 over roughly two years. In Canada that lines up with Grades 9 and 10. Only a small number of private schools teach it, so online tutoring often fills the gap.

Papers are set by Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel or Oxford AQA. Cambridge grades largely on an A* to G scale and holds an extra October/November sitting. The other two grade 9 to 1, and 9 is the highest.

More than 50 universities in Canada accept Cambridge results. Good IGCSE grades in subjects such as Biology 0610 or First Language English 0500 give a newcomer a strong start in the senior grades.

Resuming IGCSE in Canada in five clear steps

This is how a family new to Canada goes from first contact to steady weekly lessons, without losing the progress made at the old school.

Restart IGCSE lessons
Stage 1 · Today

Tell us where your child left off

Share the board, syllabus codes and the last topics covered at the old school. Old reports or mock results help us see the gaps.

Stage 2 · By tomorrow

A tutor who knows that syllabus

Inside 24 hours, a specialist for that board is lined up. Lesson slots appear in your province's local time, in the evenings or at weekends.

Stage 3 · Trial

A trial to check the fit

Your child spends a paid trial lesson, AED 20 to 60 (between US$5 and US$16), with the tutor. Not the right match? We switch tutors free of charge.

Stage 4 · Weekly

Weekly lessons that close the gaps

Lessons target topics missed during the move, then build exam skill with past paper questions. Notes, flashcards and homework follow every session.

Stage 5 · Monthly

Monthly reports while you settle

Your tutor writes up each week, and a monthly progress report tracks how your child is catching up. Change times or stop whenever you like, with no lock-in.

Balancing IGCSE with a Canadian school timetable

Many newcomer students attend a local school while finishing IGCSE. These three points help you plan the overlap without overloading your child.

Map the overlap

List which IGCSE topics your child still needs and which ones the new school already covers. Your tutor then spends lesson time only where it counts.

Pick an exam series

Most students sit the summer series, from late April through May to early June. The Cambridge October/November series can give a new arrival more time to prepare.

Results and next steps

Summer grades are published around mid to late August, while Cambridge November grades appear in January. Those results then support the move into Grade 11 and beyond.

Newcomer FAQs

Newcomer questions about finishing IGCSE in Canada

Answers on finishing IGCSE after a move, local diplomas, time zones, cost and exam entry for families in Canada.

Can my child finish IGCSE in Canada?

Yes. Your child keeps the same board and syllabus with an online tutor, then sits the exams at a test centre that takes private entrants. Ask local centres early about entries.

Does IGCSE replace the Ontario OSSD?

No. A provincial diploma like the OSSD comes from your child's Canadian school. IGCSE is a separate qualification, so a student can work towards both at once.

Do lessons work in Newfoundland or Pacific time?

Yes. Every lesson is booked in your local time, in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto or Halifax. Lesson slots can shift when school events clash.

What do Canadian families pay for IGCSE lessons?

Expect to pay from AED 50, about US$14, per hour; the rate varies by subject and tutor. A trial costs AED 20 to 60, and you are never locked in.

What if my child changed boards when we moved?

Tell us both boards. A tutor can close the gap, for example from Edexcel Maths A 4MA1 to Cambridge 0580, by checking which topics your child has already done.

Can the tutor catch up missed topics?

Yes. Moves often leave gaps. Your tutor finds them in the first lessons, teaches them in a sensible order, and recordings let your child revisit tricky ideas.
