Six ways our lessons turn knowledge into marks
Most History students know the events. Marks are won or lost in how they use sources and build an argument, so that is where lessons focus.
What does Cambridge IGCSE History (0470) involve?
Cambridge teaches IGCSE History as syllabus 0470, and Pearson Edexcel teaches it as 4HI1. Students usually start at 14 and sit the exams at 16. Families across the GCC choose it for modern world history, and it leads on to A-Level History.
According to worldwide figures from Cambridge for June 2025, 15.8% of IGCSE History candidates gained an A*, while 75.6% finished with a C grade or better. Cambridge students sit two set papers, then either a coursework essay or a one-hour alternative paper.
Many students lose marks even when they know the events well. They summarise a source instead of judging it, or tell a story when the question asks how far. Our tutors teach a clear plan for each question type, practised weekly.
Of the Cambridge grade comes from the two-hour Paper 1 structured essays.
The most sources a single Paper 2 question can include, all on one prescribed topic.
Depth studies offered in Edexcel 4HI1 Paper 1, and students study at least two.
IGCSE History content, from Versailles to the Cold War
Below are the six Option B key questions and the five Cambridge depth studies. Your tutor also teaches Option A, and starts with the key questions your child finds hardest.
How your tutor gets your child ready for each paper
On the Cambridge route, Papers 1 and 2 are compulsory, with coursework or Paper 4 on top. Edexcel has two papers worth half the grade each. Your tutor plans around the papers your school enters.
Structured essays
Three questions, each split into parts (a), (b) and (c). Your tutor drills the step from describing to explaining, then on to a reasoned judgement.
Document questions
Five parts on one prescribed topic, using up to seven sources. Your tutor practises message, purpose and reliability with sources from past papers.
Coursework or its alternative
For Paper 4, your tutor builds timed two-part answers on a depth study. For coursework, lessons strengthen research and essay skills, while the work stays your child's own.
Paper 1, depth studies
One question on each of two depth studies, including judging interpretations. Your tutor sets timed questions in the Edexcel style.
Paper 2, investigation and breadth
One question on a historical investigation with sources, and one on a breadth study of change over time. Your tutor prepares both sections.
Argument and judgement
Top answers reply to the question directly, back it with evidence and weigh other views. Your tutor checks this in every practice essay.

Historians who teach argument, not just dates
We accept fewer than 2 out of each 100 tutor applicants. Each History tutor clears a subject interview plus a trial teaching session, and all of them coach source work and essay writing.

Questions families ask about History lessons
Short answers on coursework, sources, essays, prescribed topics, exam boards and cost.
Should my child take coursework or Paper 4?
Your child's school makes that choice. Each route carries 30% of the grade, out of 40 marks. Coursework means one essay of up to 2,000 words; Paper 4 is a one-hour exam on a depth study. Your tutor supports either.
What goes wrong in source answers?
Paper 2 rewards judging a source, not retelling it. Students must explain its message, ask why it was made and check it against other sources. Your tutor practises this with past questions until it becomes habit.
How do you improve essay structure?
Your tutor teaches a simple plan: answer the question in the first line, explain each point with evidence, then weigh both sides to reach a judgement. Practice essays are marked against the official levels.
Which Paper 2 topic comes up in June 2027?
For June 2027, Cambridge has set how secure the USSR's control over Eastern Europe was, 1948 to c.1989, for Option B, and overseas empires for Option A. Your tutor plans source practice around it.
Do you teach Edexcel 4HI1 History?
